| A 10-day-old, Japanese Black, female calf had shown astasia since just after birth. Focal symmetrical periventricular malacic lesions of the cerebrum and suppurative arthritis of the left hip joint were observed in macroscopic examination. Histologically, the cerebral lesions were confirmed as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). The location and histological features of the lesions were similar to PVL in humans, caused by neonatal ischemia/hypovolemia. This is the first report of PVL in a neonatal calf. |

| Hemotropic mycoplasmas (hemoplasmas) are cell-wall deficient, epierythrocytic bacteria that cause infectious anemia in several mammalian species. The prevalence of hemoplasma species was examined by screening and species-specific PCR using blood samples collected from 51 sika deer in Hokkaido, Japan. Molecular analyses were performed for the 16S rRNA, 23S rRNA and RNase P RNA (rnpB) gene sequences. A total of 23/51 (45%) deer DNA samples were positive for hemoplasmas in the screening PCR. Using species-specific PCR, 12 and 17 samples were positive for ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemocervae’ and ‘Candidatus M. erythrocervae’, respectively. | The prevalence and risk factors of 2 bovine hemoplasma species—Mycoplasma wenyonii (Mw) and “Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos” (CMh)—were examined by direct PCR using whole blood samples collected from 343 cattle in Eastern Hokkaido, Japan. The sensitivity of the direct PCR assay was 10-fold higher than the standard PCR assay, detecting 5 copies of bovine hemoplasma DNA per reaction. An epidemiological survey of sampling location, living conditions, age and bovine leukemia virus antibody was performed to assess infection risk factors. | 臨床的に牛白血病を疑ったものの，牛白血病ではないと確定診断されたホルスタイン種乳牛11症例の臨床所見を回顧的に整理した．11症例は体表リンパ節腫大あるいは体腔内の腫瘤触知により牛白血病との鑑別診断が必要であったが，病理解剖により乳房炎，子宮蓄膿症，膿瘍，肺炎，腸炎またはアミロイド症と診断された．牛白血病ウイルス（Bovine leukemia virus: BLV）抗体陽性を呈した4頭のうち，リンパ球増多症を呈したものが2頭であった．またこれら2頭のうち1頭はリンパ節細胞診でも大型リンパ球優勢であった．しかし，血清チミジンキナーゼ（Tymidine kinase: TK），総乳酸脱水素酵素（Lactate dehydrogenase: LDH），LDHアイソザイム2および3の活性値は4頭とも基準値以内であり，牛白血病発症は否定的であった．BLV抗体陰性牛7頭のうち，リンパ節細胞診を実施した2頭は小型リンパ球優勢であり，また，リンパ球増多症を呈した症例はいなかった．1症例では血清TK活性値が基準値をわずかに超えており，また，他の2頭は総LDH，LDHアイソザイム2および3の活性値がいずれも基準値を超えていたが，他の検査項目は牛白血病について否定的であった．腫大リンパ節の細胞診，リンパ球数算定，血清TK，総LDH，LDHアイソザイム2および3の活性値測定といった牛白血病診断のための検査を複数実施することで，牛白血病を否定するための診断精度を高めることが可能と考えられた． |

| Serological methods were utilized to detect Anaplasma and Ehrlichia infection in domestic animals in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. By using an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), antibodies that reacted with Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Ehrlichia chaffeensis were detected mainly in ruminants kept on pastureland in Altai, Ili and Kashgar area. Antibody titers up to 1:320 were recorded. These results indicate that ruminants kept in these areas may be infected with some species of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. |

| A serological survey of Borrelia infection of dogs was performed in Sapporo, Japan, where Borrelia garinii infection in dogs was detected in 2011. A total of 314 serum samples were collected from dogs that visited three animal hospitals in Sapporo from 2012 to 2014. The two-step evaluation method, involving screening ELISA followed by Western blot analysis, was used to detect antibodies against Borrelia species. A total of 34 samples were positive by ELISA. Among those 34 samples, 32 were positive for Borrelia spp. by Western blot. These findings suggest that the 32 dogs (10.2%) generated antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, such as B. garinii or B. afzelii. | In peripartum dairy cows, insulin resistance (IR) increases to adjust the direction of energy to lactation after calving. To investigate the effect of prepartum IR on postpartum reproductive performance, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) was applied to 15 cows at 3 weeks (Pre21) and 10 days (Pre10) before the predicted calving date. Blood glucose area under the curve (AUCglu) within 120 min after administration of 0.05 IU/kg-BW insulin was calculated. | Anaplasma marginale is an etiologic agent of bovine anaplasmosis. This study aimed to molecularly detect and characterize A. marginale that is prevalent in Mongolian cattle populations. A highly specific and sensitive nested PCR (nPCR) method based on the Msp5 gene was developed to detect A. marginale (Msp5 nPCR). The method detected A. marginale from the positive DNA samples obtained from different countries, while no amplicons were observed from DNA samples of several other bovine blood pathogens tested. | A total of 87 Thoroughbred horses and 10 ixodid ticks from a ranch in Hidaka district, Hokkaido were tested for tick-borne diseases. Using the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) method, 3.4, 92.0 and 97.7% of the horses showed antibody titers of ≥80 against Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia helvetica, and Borrelia garinii, respectively. This is the first report of infection with the 3 pathogens in horses in Japan. Using PCR, DNAs from the peripheral blood of all horses were found negative with any Anaplasma, Rickettsia and Borrelia spp., while those from Haemaphysalis megaspinosa ticks were found positive for Anaplasma sp. closely related to A. phagocytophilum in Japan, and A. bovis. B. japonica was also detected in an H. flava tick for the first time. |

| 体表リンパ節の腫脹, 末梢血中における異型リンパ球出現を伴うリンパ球数の著増などの典型的な牛白血病症状を示していなかったことから, それぞれアミロイドーシス, 胸膜炎, 心疾患が疑われた3頭のホルスタイン種乳雌牛を病理解剖したところ, いずれも牛白血病と診断された. 血液検査および身体検査において著変が観察されない場合でも, 難診断時には鑑別診断リストに牛白血病を加えるべきであると考えられた. |

| An 8-month-old Holstein heifer with cervical enlargement was suspected of thymic lymphosarcoma given clinical signs of depression, tendency to lie down, cervical mass, jugular vein distension, conjunctival hyperemia, and ruminal tympany. Unilateral Horner’s syndrome was also observed. Increased serum total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), LDH isozyme (LDH-2, and LDH-3) and serum thymidine kinase activity were observed. The findings of fine needle aspiration cytology of the cervical mass revealed large lymphoblasts with mitoses present. These findings strongly suggested the diagnosis of lymphosarcoma. | We report here the non-contrast and contrast-enhanced computed tomography performed in two calves with brain abscess and multiple pulmonary abscesses with pharyngeal abscess, respectively. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography was useful in the diagnosis of these diseases in both calves. The diseases were confirmed by histopathological examination. |

| This study evaluated the clinical usefulness of serum thymidine kinase (TK) activity for diagnosing bovine leukosis cases for which clinical diagnosis was difficult (‘BL with difficult diagnosis’). Median TK activity values in 24 ‘BL with difficult diagnosis’ and 36 cattle for which BL was clinically confirmed by cytology findings of enlarged superficial lymph nodes (‘clinically confirmed BL’) were 36.8 and 39.4 U/l, respectively (no significant difference). | A 9-month-old steer was autopsied due to recurrent ruminal tympany. A macroscopic examination found an enlarged caudal mediastinal lymph node, and a section of the lymph node revealed necrosis with marked calcification, similar to tuberculous lymphadenitis. Histopathologically, the lesion consisted of multiple coagulative necrotic foci and fibrosis with macrophage, lymphocyte, eosinophil and multinucleated giant cell infiltration. | The prokinetic effect of the 5-HT4 receptor agonist mosapride was evaluated in seven healthy thoroughbreds. Mosapride was orally administerd at doses of 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 mg/kg. The breath 13CO2/12CO2 rate (Δ13CO2), an indirect indicator for the rate of gastric empting, was measured at appropriate points for 4 hr after drug administration. There was a significant increase compared with the control value at 15, 20 and 165 min for 0.5 mg/kg, 30 min at 1.0 mg/kg and 165 min for 1.5 mg/kg. The results suggest that mosapride may facilitate the gastric emptying in horses. |
